The island of Ikaria has its mythical touch with its name derived from Icarus, the boy who died from drowning after flying to close to the sun. According to Greek mythology, Icarus and his father tried to escape the labyrinth by flying using wings made of wax but the boy flew to close to sun which caused the wax to melt. His body was believed to be found and buried in an island which is now Ikaria.
