Syros

Syros, a hilly island is one of the smaller of the Cyclades islands. It is 22kms long and 9 kms wide with an area of 86 squre kilometres. However, because it is the capital of the group, its largest town, Hermoupolis, is in fact the largest town in the Cyclades with a population of over 13,000 people.  Its central situation makes it the principal centre of administration, commerce and fisheries in the Cyclades and a focal point of the shipping routes in the Central Aegean.

The island does not attract a lot of tourist because it does not have a lot of beaches to offer, but the town of Hermoupolis does. Since it is not a tourist resort, the island is still full of young Greeks than foreigners. For a renting a yacht and start a sailing holiday there are several good bays to anchor and the island of Gaidaros has an excellent anchorage. This island still contain the allure that sailors are drawn into.

It would be great to visit this island by yachting or yacht renting. But you have to take note that there are regulations governing yacht chartering. Up until 2003 if your yacht was to be rented in Greek waters then it had to be registered in Greece. The amount of paperwork was prodigious. But now any EU-flagged boat can charter in Greece as long as it complies with Greek safety regulations for rented boats. 

A number of companies will put your boat under the Greek flag and charter it, paying you a percentage of the returns as well as allowing you the use of your boat in the off-season and for a limited period in the season.
