Yacht Charters in Hydra Island
The Hydra Gulf is located between the Saronic Gulf and the Argolic Gulf and is a one of the most popular yacht charter areas in Greece. It is arid and infertile, and lives mainly off of the tourist trade by selling craft products like jewelry, pottery, embroidery, hand-woven cloth, and leather work. A local specialty food is the almond cake called amygdalote, this is sure to please your taste buds.
The little town of Hydra sits quaintly along and up the slopes of the hills around its sheltered harbor on the North coast of the island. It is a favorite resort spot, especially for painters, and intellectuals, who give the town its particular characteristic and atmosphere ideal for luxury motor yacht charters.
On the wharf sits the ancient Conventual Church of the Panyia (17th c.), it has a beautiful cloister. On the other side of the harbor are great mansions of the early 19th c. ship owners and merchants, which include the houses of Admiral Lakovos Tombazis and Dimitrios Voulgaris. One of these mansions currently is used as a training school for the merchant navy.
The plain white and sometimes color washed houses of the town on the slopes above the harbor are Cycladic in nature. They add to the charm and tradition of the island.
Above the town to the West sit the ruins of a medieval castle; if you go even lower down you will see buttresses that were built during the War of Independence. The Hydra harbor is very crowded in the summer months. The best taverns can be found further up in town and others you will find when you rent a luxury yacht on a sailing holiday.
North West of Hydra sits the quaint little island of Dokos and the village of the same name is located in a sheltered bay on the North coast. The mainland has many fascinating anchorages and the quaint village of Ermioni.
